Welcome to the getting started page. If you're reading this, I hope it's because you're interested in taking the first step to learning Karate. Karate is often advertised as appealing to either children or mean looking males kicking each other about. All my club members know this is far from the truth. Therefore, I hope the following pages will answer any questions or concerns you may have about joining us, and encourage you to take the first simple step. However, if you have any further questions or concerns, please contact me, I am happy to help. Click on the frequently asked questions below.

I look forward to welcoming you.

Am I the right age?

Karate is enjoyed by anyone between the age of 5 and 95. It doesn't matter how young or old you are. You learn Karate at a pace that you are comfortable with. The important thing is that you are safe and that you enjoy it.

When will I get a black belt?

All students in Karate start at exactly the same place. At the first grading, the blue belt is awarded to students who pass. This is called 10th Kyu (Blue belt) Gradings take place every three months and at each grading, a student can progress, subject to learning and passing the grading syllabus, to the next grade 9th Kyu (Red). Then 8th Kyu (Orange), 7th Kyu (Yellow), 6th Kyu (Green), 5th Kyu (Purple), 4th Kyu (Purple/white), 3rd Kyu (Brown). Thereafter, gradings are held every six months when a student can progress to 2nd Kyu (Brown/white) and 1st Kyu (Brown/Red). A 1st Kyu (Brown/Red belt) can then progress to their 1st Dan, the first dan grade - Black belt.

Why Karate?

Karate offers different things to different people.
Some train in Karate to keep fit, or just to keep themselves active. Some join to meet people and develop an interest outside of work or home life. Others aspire to be the highest grade or be the best in their chosen sport.

Whatever your reason for taking part, Karate is a safe, enjoyable and rewarding activity that you can practice at your own pace under the instruction and guidance of trained and understanding instructors. You'll also be with like minded individuals of all ages who have taken up Karate for the same reasons as you.

What do I wear?

When you first start training, you can should wear light clothing such as a track suit or casual clothes such as a t-shirt and shorts. You don't need to purchase a karate suit (Gi) until after your first karate grading. Karate suits are available from each of my clubs and start from £20 each including a white belt and an association badge.
